I’ve been using the Van Staal VR Bailed Black Spinning Reel for about two months now, and I can honestly say it’s lived up to the hype. I fish 2–3 times a week, mostly saltwater, and this reel has handled everything I’ve thrown at it.
The drag is super smooth, and it has plenty of power when fighting strong fish. So far, I’ve landed stripers and a few bluefish, and the reel didn’t even flinch. I like the bailed design because it makes casting and line pickup quicker and more convenient compared to the bail-less reels I’ve used in the past.
What really stands out is the build quality. The black finish still looks brand new despite being dunked in saltwater and sprayed with sand. I just rinse it lightly after each trip, and it hasn’t shown any signs of corrosion. It feels solid in the hand but not overly heavy, so I can fish it all day without fatigue.
If I had to nitpick, it’s on the pricier side, but honestly, after using it, I see it as an investment. It’s the kind of reel that feels like it’s built to last for years, not just a season.
Overall: After two months of steady use, I’m really happy I picked this up. Smooth, tough, and reliable exactly what I needed in a saltwater reel.
